Why
DreamHost?
Why am I
recommending that you use
DreamHost?
Because I like them. I've used a lot of different hosting companies over
the years, and DreamHost is my favorite. Their website is well organized
and easy to use. Plus, they're affordable.
Summary
of the Steps
This is a beginner's guide
to starting a new website. These are the topics that it covers:
-
Basic terms that you should
know with understandable definitions
-
How to register domain names
-
How to get website hosting
-
How to create email
addresses for your domain name
-
How to use your email
address in a program like Outlook
-
How to make a very simple
web page in HTML
-
How to use FTP to put your
web pages online
-
The next steps that you can take in creating
your website
Why
provide these free instructions?
I've been working with
websites for a long time, both for myself and for clients. I've noticed
that the part that seems scariest for people is the process of signing up
for a hosting provider and learning how to get their web pages online.
I've also found that once people can get a simple introduction to HTML,
they feel much more confident about learning more. I feel that this
website fills a need that has mostly gone unmet until now.
Why doesn't this site explain more about web design?
I've chosen to focus on a
different aspect of website creation for beginners -- the more technical
process of actually getting a website set up. Design is a completely
different subject, and there are many websites out there that cover it
already. I've listed some of my favorites on the
Resources page.
